IE7 background-position quirk

I have been slaving away on a new design for a site I am creating. Low and behold, as I make the design more complex and the site more accessible, IE7’s quirks start to show.

The last quirk I defeated was a problem with the background-position property. I had a container that needed a background image to repeat vertically, and it needed to be positioned 700px from the left side (in order to form a border for a side bar). IE7 was not having it…the image would not tile vertically. I tried a few different things to no avail, and then it dawned on me that (stupid) IE probably needs a height defined, so I defined the height as 100% and it worked!

So, in summation, if you are having a problem in IE where your background image wont repeat vertically and you have not set the height of the element, set the height!

Dell: back in the good books!

I have to say that I am quite pleased with the support I received from Dell regarding my m1330 laptop. I stated in a previous post that I had a few issues with the way the [sub-contracted] Dell tech put my laptop reassembled my laptop after a motherboard replacement. I called Dell on Monday and complained to them. The first person I spoke to wasn’t much help so I spoke to a manager. They decided to ship me a box so I could send my laptop to their service depot. The box arrived at my door 9am the next morning (Tuesday). I decided to ship the laptop out around 3pm on Wednesday, and I just received it back this morning (Friday)!  All of the issues were fixed and I am happy with the speedy service!

Dell m1330 issue: vertical coloured bars/random restarting

If there is anyone who owns a Dell m1330 and has a problem with it randomly restarting and/or showing random coloured vertical bars on start up, you are not alone. It happened to me as well as many others. There is a thread about this problem over at Notebook Review Forum that is (currently) 30 pages long!

Why I haven’t been blogging/Ubuntu is amazing

I haven’t created a blog post in a while, and Ubuntu is definitely to blame. I started experiencing some problems with Windows Vista that really bugged me, and decided to partition my drive and give Ubuntu a try. I have to admit that getting everything to work wasn’t as easy as I thought, but now that it works it’s amazing.

Problem with Adobe Illustrator solved

I am running Windows Vista and I have a Logitech mouse that uses the SetPoint software. In Adobe Illustrator I had a problem where scrolling with the mouse wheel would cause a barrage of the ‘ding’ error sounds Windows creates. I solved this problem by disabling SetPoint when I use Illustrator. It only happens with this combination of software (that I am aware of). Just thought I’d post in case anyone else has similar problems.

There’s nothing like working with the proper tools

For the longest time, since I first started designing websites back in 2003, I have been using Photoshop 7 and notepad to create my websites. It worked great for many years, and I accomplished many things, but I recently picked up the Adobe CS3 Web Premium suite, and it is sweet.

Holey Windows Vista…

Back in September, when I first started University, I got a Dell m1330 laptop. It has fairly good specs: 2.2GHz duo core (santa rosa), 2gigs of ram, nVidia 8400GS graphics card etc. VERY capable of running Windows Vista. I still manage to suffer from performance problems! Well, at least they’re not speed related, but they are horrible non the less!

First impressions working with wordpress plugins

Well today I got my first taste working with Wordpress plugins. I downloaded a plugin that would change the colour of the comments that I, myself, posted. I did not like the way it was implemented, so I decided to write my own. Let me just tell you I had quite a hassel for what seemed like no reason.

Study tips: don’t study like I do!

If you are a student, you probably study like I do; that is, you do not study that well. Most students are the same. We sit down with our books in front of us, it’s quiet, and we are confident that we will get down to our studies. However, things always seem to interfere. For me it’s the damn Internet. Every twenty minutes or so I find myself putting down my text in order to explore the latest posts on my favourite forum, or checking to see if anyone has messaged me on facebook. How can we study more effectively?
